Initial Moving Checklist

Moving house can be incredibly stressful, especially when people don’t plan and prepare efficiently. Six weeks before your move

 

These are just some of the things that you should do around six months before your moving date:

  • Confirm the date of your move so that you work around this
  • If you are currently renting, notify your landlord of your moving date – keeping everyone in the loop
  • Speak with your home insurer and ensure that you have cover from the you move into your new home

  • If you have decided that you do not want to use a removals company, ask friends and relatives if they can assist
  • Book storage facilities if you require them
  • Notify relevant utility companies
  • Start decluttering your home and getting rid of possessions that you no longer need – You can sell these or give them away, whatever you decide
  • If you need new furniture or carpets for your new house, now is the time to get them ordered, and arrange for them to be delivered when you move in

Two weeks before your move

 

At least two weeks before your move, here are things that you need to do:

  • Start to pack your things into cardboard moving boxes, packing one room at a time and being sure to label all boxes efficiently to make the unpacking process easier
  • De-register from your doctors, dentist and opticians if you are moving area and find new ones in your new area
  • Take a trip to the post office and arrange for your post to be forwarded – There will be a fee for this but it needs to be done
  • Tell your milk man and newspaper provider hat you’re moving
  • If you have children or pets arrange for someone to look after them for you on your moving day
  • Finalise arrangements with your removals company if you are using one
  • Notify the bank and other providers regarding your change of address
